Since its introduction in 1967, Porsche’s open-top Targa body style has grown to be one of the most beloved forms of the revered 911 model. This remarkably well-preserved example also has the cachet of being a 911 S, the high-performance variant that was campaigned by racing privateers and used as the basis of some of the factory’s greatest competition cars of the era.

Equipped with a 2.4-liter, flat-six engine – new for 1972 – this wonderfully preserved 911 S remains in excellent, largely original condition and is finished in its original color scheme of Irish Green over black leatherette upholstery. According to accompanying factory records, the Targa was generously optioned with air-conditioning, tinted windows, limited-slip differential, through-the-grille fog lamps, and a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio. The car exudes a very honest character with authentic details, like the period decals affixed to the rear glass.

The 911’s original owner, Paul De Vries, took European delivery of the car and retained it for over 40 years. Following his death, the Porsche was sold to the current owner, a collector with a passion for unrestored sports cars. Displaying approximately 75,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, this Targa is offered with its owner’s manual, tool kit, maintenance record book, and a trove of original documentation dating to its original purchase. Boasting long-term ownership, rare features, and uncommon originality, this 911 S Targa would beautifully complement any sports car collection, particularly those of dedicated Porsche enthusiasts.
